Haryana is a leading State in the field of inland culture and score an important place in up-liftment of social and economic development of country. Being a vegetarian state in a sage-head, has a high potential for inland fisheries. Fish culture has become a very important source of employment in rural areas and to promote the fisheries, efforts are being made to bring more and more available water area under fisheries. The main objective of the fisheries department of Haryana is to train the fish farmers to produce quality fish seed and make them easily available to the fish farmers, promoting fisheries in the natural water resources, promoting more and more new species of fish and providing the technical and financial support to the fish farmers.

In the year 1966-67, only 58 hectare water area was under fish culture by stocking 1.5 lakh fish seed and total fish production was 600 tonne per year. Haryana has good scope for the shrimp culture as there is plenty of land affected by salinity. It is the first landlocked State in the country to utilize water logged/ underground saline water for white shrimp culture i.e. L.vannamei. White Shrimp has been introduced in Saline affected areas in the State of Haryana in the year 2014-15 in consultation with CIFE Lahli, Rohtak. Since then, Haryana State has made land mark progress in the field of shrimp culture.  An area of 5900 acre affected with Saline groundwater has already been brought under fish/shrimp culture.
